Volunteer (Angola 1999)

Position: Development Instructor (international volunteer)

Employer: Humana People to People/ DAPP Angola
Location: Cabinda Vocational College, Cabinda Province, Angola
Duration: 6 months (Apr - Oct 1999)

In 1999 I took a year out from my degree to volunteer. I joined the Development Instructor Programme run by Humana People to People and spent six months at a project in Angola, southern Africa. I worked at a vocational college that trained young adults skills and theory in construction, agriculture and business. My role was to assist the Project Leader and support the teaching staff.

I took on administrative duties, running clubs and extra curricular activities as well as teaching English and fundraising actions.

The experience changed my whole understanding of my place in the world and what I could achieve. So much so that after completing my degree I re-joined Humana People to People to become a manger of its Development Instructor Programme in South Africa (see relevant page on the right).
