Cross Green, Leeds (neighbourhood strategy)

Design project - MA Urban Design 2011 - Sheffield School of Architecture

Aim:
Develop a strategy for a growing neighbourhood based upon a mix of self-organised housing as a catalyst.

Key Strategies:
  1. Re-configure the lay out of the existing back-to-back terraces; knocking two single aspect houses into one - creating a more generous double aspect house, and transforming every other road into back gardens providing private space for each house.
  2. Using perimeter blocks of terraces for the new development.
  3. Ensure that the total population is great enough to support community based facilities
  4. Allow the growth of a hub of these facilities at the edge of the site closest to the neighbouring community, so that they may serve a wider population; primary school, doctors, grocery store etc.
